ANNIE GOODING SYKES (CINCINNATI, OH) WATERCOLOR Annie Gooding Sykes (Cincinnati, Ohio, 1855-1931) 14" x 19" watercolor of seascape scene. Signed lower left "A.G. Sykes". Annie Sykes was recognized for her colorful, impressionist-inspired watercolors. Throughout her career, she explored themes ranging from landscapes, flowers, and scenery of New England, Europe and Bermuda. She studied at the Lowell Institute in Boston in 1875. She moved to Cincinnati and enrolled at the Cincinnati Art Academy in 1884, where she studied under Frank Duveneck and Thomas Noble. She began exhibiting at the Boston Art Club in 1890 and the New York Watercolor Club in 1891. In 1892, she became a member of the Women's Art Club of Cincinnati, where she exhibited until 1923. JOHN ELLSWORTH WEIS (CINCINNATI, OH) OIL PAINTING John Ellsworth Weis (Cincinnati, Ohio, 1892-1962) 15" x 18" oil on board of pier scene. Signed lower right "J.E. Weis" and dated "1933". John Weis was born in Powell County, Indiana. He moved to Cincinnati at the age of nine. At the age of 14, he enrolled in night classes at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He studied under Duveneck, Meakin, Hopkins and Wessel. He was a member of the Cincinnati Art Club and the Cincinnati MacDowell Club. At the age of 22, he was offered a job on the faculty of the Cincinnati Art Academy. He held his position for 38 years. Snyder" and dated "1904". William Snyder was one of the earliest artist to paint in Brown County, Indiana in the 1870's. He settled in Madison, Indiana, where he specialized in forest and beech trees. He studied in Cincinnati, New York and Philadelphia. One of Indiana's premier artists.
